Adhesion is water sticking to other materials. Adhesion is very important to life including our bodies. It creates capillary action, named because it helps blood move up our veins and capillaries against gravity. Adhesion also helps water be drawn up through the soil and into plants where it is soaked into the leaves. It also works with cohesion to create surface tension. Overall, adhesion contributes to humans, and plants and so it is very important to life.
Specific heat is the amount of heat requared to raise the temperare of a substance (in this case, water) one degree Celsius. Water has an unusually high specific heat. This is important to life because if the specific heat was low, then water would not retain heat at night, thus freezing and killing underwater animals. The ocean needs a high specific heat because if the temperature changed a great amount very fast, it could change the temperature of the air and plants and animals can only live with a certain amount of heat fluxuation.
Water is a universal solvent. This means that it is able to dissolve many polar materials and substances. The water molecules surround the other substance and break apart the bonds of the other molecules. Because of this, water can dissolve important minerals and nutrients needed for humans and plants to live. Also, drinking alot of good clean water can help break down food.
Cohesion is water sticking to water. It's caused by hydrogen bonds attaching to one another. It's what helps water droplets form. It also allows several insects to walk on water because of high surface tension caused by cohesion and adhesion working together. It also works with adhesion to create capillary action. Cohesion helps the water stick to itself to travel through the body or through plants.
Water's states of matter are as follows: liquid (water), solid (ice), gas (steam), and plasma. About 70% of the human body is made up of liquid water. Without it, we would die. Sea ice is very important to the organisms that live in the Arctic ocean. Without it, the ocean would get warmer during the summer months and kill the things that live there. Gaseous water is important for respiration throughout human's and animal's bodies. Plasma is the most common state of matter because it is what stars are made of.
